Game console has no picture: what to check

If the console turns on but the TV shows nothing, the cause is often the cable, the TV input or the HDMI port. These checks take a few minutes.

The easy checks

  • Make sure the TV is on the right HDMI input.
  • Try a different HDMI cable. Cables fail more often than you’d think.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • Switch everything off, unplug the console for a minute and try again.

Try another TV

If you can, plug the console into a different TV or monitor. If it works there, the problem is the TV or its settings, not the console.

Look at the port

With the console off and unplugged, look into the HDMI port. Bent pins, a loose port or visible damage point to a port problem. Don’t poke at it with metal.

Other signs to note

  • Does it make sound but show no picture?
  • Does the picture flicker when the cable moves?
  • Does it get very hot, or shut off by itself?

Tell us what you see when you bring it in. It helps us find the cause faster.

When to bring it in

If a different cable, port and TV make no difference, the HDMI port or the console’s video output may be at fault. We’ll inspect it and tell you what the fix is and what it costs before any work starts.
