How to Tell if a Cracked Phone Screen Is Still Safe to Use
A cracked screen is not always an emergency, but it never gets better on its own. Here is how to judge whether you can keep using your phone for a short time, and which warning signs mean it's time to stop.

If the crack is thin, the glass is firmly in place, and the display and touch both work normally, you can usually keep using the phone for a short while until you can get it repaired. If you see loose glass, spreading damage, display glitches or heat, stop using it and have it looked at.
Keep in mind that a crack is a weak spot. It can spread with a small bump or a change in temperature, and it can let in dust and moisture. We can't tell how serious it is from a description or a photo, so a technician has to inspect the phone.
Signs it is probably fine for a little while
None of these is a promise that the phone is safe, but together they suggest the damage may be limited to the outer glass.
- The crack is thin, and no glass flakes or chips are coming loose.
- The edges are not sharp enough to scratch your finger or cheek.
- Touch works everywhere on the screen, including the corners and edges.
- The picture looks normal, with no lines, dark spots or color patches.
- The screen sits flat against the phone with no gap along the frame.
- The phone is not getting unusually hot and the battery behaves as usual.
Signs you should stop using it now
These point to damage beyond the surface glass, or to a safety problem.
- Glass is chipping, flaking or leaving sharp edges.
- Ink-like blotches, colored lines, flickering or black patches appear on the display.
- The screen taps by itself, ignores your touch in some areas or acts erratically.
- The screen is lifting, bulging or separating from the frame, which can be a sign of a swollen battery.
- The phone feels hot, has hot spots or gives off a burning smell.
- The phone also got wet at some point after the crack.
Getting through until the repair
If your phone is in the first group and you can't come in right away, a few habits lower the risk. Do not try to open the phone, press on a bulging screen, pry off loose glass or use heat to loosen anything. If the screen is swollen, the phone smells like it's burning, or it has been exposed to liquid, turn it off, stop charging it and bring it in as soon as you can.
- Back up what you can, so your photos and files are safe whatever happens next.
- Keep the phone away from water, steam and damp pockets, since a crack can let moisture in.
- Avoid pressing hard on the cracked area or carrying the phone where it can be squeezed.
- A clear screen protector or clear tape over the crack can keep small flakes from catching on your fingers. Treat it as a short-term measure, not a repair.
When to bring it in and what we do
Any cracked screen is worth having checked, and the sooner the better if you notice spreading cracks, display problems or touch trouble. Walk in at OneTechPro in Decatur during opening hours, Monday to Saturday 11 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 5 PM. No appointment is needed, and you are welcome to call or text first. Please bring the charger and your passcode if you have them.
We inspect the phone first, tell you what it needs and what it costs before any work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead. Many screen repairs are done in the store in 1 to 2 hours, and we give you a time after looking at your phone. Some take longer.
Repairs carry some risk. Features such as Face ID or Touch ID can be damaged or stop working, data can be lost, and replacement parts are aftermarket parts, not original manufacturer parts. Repairs have a 30-day warranty from pickup on parts and workmanship, which does not cover physical damage or water damage. Please see our Terms of Use for details. We serve Decatur, Lithonia, Stone Mountain, Clarkston, Tucker and nearby communities.
