What a Swollen Phone Battery Means and What to Do Next

A swollen or puffy phone battery means something has gone wrong inside the battery, and it should be treated as a safety issue. Stop charging the phone, stop using it, and have a technician look at it.

What a swollen battery actually means

Phone batteries are sealed packs. When one swells, the pack is usually filling with gas, which pushes the case outward. Age, heavy wear, damage and faulty charging can all be behind it, but only a technician who inspects the phone can tell you the cause in your case.

The reason to take it seriously is that a swollen battery is no longer in normal condition. It can be a risk to the phone and to you, so the right move is to stop using the phone rather than wait and see if it settles down.

Signs a battery may be swelling

Swelling is not always obvious. The battery sits behind the screen and back panel, so you often notice the effects on the phone before you see the battery. Things to watch for:

  • The screen is lifting or separating from the frame, or there is a new gap along the edge.
  • The back panel is bulging, or the phone rocks when you set it flat on a table.
  • The case looks warped or no longer fits together the way it used to.
  • The screen looks pushed up from underneath, or it feels different when you press it than it used to.
  • The phone gets unusually warm while charging or sitting idle.
  • The phone shuts off at random or the battery drains much faster than it used to.

What to do right away

If you suspect a swollen battery, act calmly and keep it simple:

  • If the phone is smoking, hissing, very hot, or smells like burning, move away from it and call 911 or your local fire department.
  • Unplug the charger and stop charging the phone.
  • Turn the phone off if you can do so easily, and stop using it.
  • Set it down on a hard, non-flammable surface, away from beds, couches, paper and anything that burns.
  • Keep it away from pets and children, and do not leave it in a car or in direct sun.
  • If you notice a burning smell, smoke or liquid, move away from the phone and treat it as urgent. Do not handle it more than you need to.
  • Bring it to a repair shop as soon as you can.
  • If you need to bring it in, carry it in a hard container or box, away from anything flammable. Do not carry it in a pocket or tight bag, and do not leave it in a hot car.

What not to do

Some well-meaning ideas make the situation worse. Please do not try any of these:

  • Do not press on the battery or the bulging area to flatten it.
  • Do not open the phone or try to pry the screen or back panel off.
  • Do not poke, puncture or cut the battery.
  • Do not use heat or cold to shrink it, including hair dryers, heaters or freezers.
  • Do not keep charging it to see if it works, even if the phone still seems to run fine.
  • Do not throw it in the regular trash. A damaged battery needs proper handling.

When to bring it in and what we do

If your phone shows any of the signs above, bring it to our shop in Decatur as soon as you can. You do not need an appointment. Walk in during opening hours, or call or text first if you would like. We serve Decatur and nearby communities including Lithonia, Stone Mountain, Clarkston and Tucker.

We inspect the phone first and tell you what it needs and what it costs before any work starts. You decide whether to go ahead. If the battery needs to be replaced, we confirm what the phone needs, and the replacement parts we use are aftermarket parts, not original manufacturer parts. Many repairs are done in the store in 1 to 2 hours, and we give you a time after we look at your phone.

Repairs carry some risk, including the possibility that data is lost or a feature stops working, and we cannot promise any outcome. Our repairs have a 30-day warranty from pickup on the parts and workmanship of the repair, which does not cover physical damage or water damage. Please see our Terms of Use for details. If you have a backup from before the problem started, that is the safest protection for your photos and files. Do not charge a swollen phone just to make a new backup. Tell us about it when you bring the phone in.
