Why Your Phone Won't Charge: Five Things to Check Before a Repair
Most charging trouble comes from something simple, like a worn cable or lint in the port, but it can also point to a problem inside the phone. Here are five safe checks to run first, and the signs that mean you should stop and bring it in.

Check 1: swap the cable. Cables take a lot of bending and tugging, and they wear out long before the phone does. Try a different cable that you know works with another device. Look closely at both ends for bent connectors, fraying or discoloration.
Check 2: change the power source. Plug the adapter into a different wall outlet, and skip power strips and extension cords for now. If you normally charge from a computer or a car, try a wall adapter instead, since those sources can be weaker or less steady. If you have a second adapter, try that too. If a different cable or adapter gets the phone charging again, you've found the likely culprit and the phone itself may be fine.
Look at the port and restart the phone
Check 3: inspect the charging port. Pocket lint and dust pack into the port over time and can stop the plug from seating all the way. Turn the phone off and shine a flashlight into the port. If you see debris, you can try to ease it out very gently with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use metal pins or needles, never use liquid, and don't force anything. If the port looks bent or damaged, or you aren't comfortable doing this, leave it for a technician.
Check 4: restart and give it time. A software glitch can sometimes stop a phone from recognizing a charger. Restart the phone, then plug it in. If the battery was completely drained, it may take several minutes on the charger before anything shows on the screen, so wait a bit before deciding it's dead. Installing any pending system update can help too, as long as the phone can stay powered while it installs.
Check 5: look for signs that mean stop
The last check is a careful look at the phone itself. Some symptoms mean the problem is more than a cable or a bit of lint, and the right move is to stop charging and have the phone inspected. A technician has to examine the device to say what's actually wrong.
Stop using and charging the phone if you notice any of these:
- The screen or back is lifting, bulging or no longer sits flat, which can be a sign of a swollen battery.
- The phone gets unusually hot, or the port or cable feels hot while charging.
- The phone has been wet, or it's been dropped and charging became a problem afterward.
- The charging connector looks burnt, discolored or loose.
- If a device is smoking, hissing, very hot or smells like burning, move away from it and call 911 or the fire department.
- To carry a damaged phone safely, put it in a hard container such as a small metal or hard plastic box, keep it away from anything flammable, and don't carry it in a pocket or bag against other items.
When to bring your phone to OneTechPro
If you've tried a different cable, a different outlet, a clean port and a restart and the phone still won't charge, it's time to have someone look. A port that has worn out, a battery that has degraded, or a problem on the charging circuit can all cause the same symptom, and it's hard to tell them apart from the outside.
